Today is blog action day, an initiative to bring more exposure to the enviromental problems.

Today i’d like to talk about the use of home servers. My old homeserver (you know, to download all those fancy Linux distro’s) was running 24/7 to serve all kinds of files to the network. It was an old AMD XP 1800 cpu, an Asus mainboard and some harddisks. Recently i found out that it was using more then 125 Watts to run, even with the harddisks spinned down. That made me wonder if i could build or buy a homeserver that has a low power consumption.

I spend about a week to do some research on energy saving components and i found out that there are huge differences between cpu brands and types. The new AMD cpu’s use about 35 Watt, while the older ones use up to 80 Watts of power. I was looking at a NAS system wich i would hack to run both torrent and usenet clients. This would use about 45 Watts of power and it had all i needed to run the same services as i did on my old home server.

But then i got an idea, why not use a mac mini? I used my power consumption meter to measure the usage on a mac mini and it uses no more then 20 Watts idle! That’s perfect. I can run anything on it and it has a very low power usage! So now there is a fancy mac mini G4 that has replaced my old home server, saving me a minimum of 80 Watts of power and that is a few hundred euro’s a year!

Because i bought the mac mini from Marktplaats (kinda the dutch ebay). It takes me less then two years to earn the costs back in power savings.

So i helped both myself and the enviroment and, i now have a fancy mac mini on my desk!

I’m getting real met het boek van de heren achter 37 signals.com. Ik ben benieuwd wat ik er van ga vinden!

Na vijf jaar trouwe dienst is het toch tijd geworden om mijn first gen iPod te vervangen door een nieuwe versie.
Omdat de video functie van de nano mij wel aanstond heb ik besloten om deze gister maar aan te schaffen (impuls aankoop FTW!)

Vandaag was in Veenendaal de grote meeting van het motor forum, zo’n 300 motoren met berijders verschenen bij de MC Donalds bij Veenendaal om elkaars motor te bewonderen.

Ik was er ook bij en heb een paar foto’s gemaakt.

Het was erg gezellig op de meet en ik zal er de volgende keer ook zeker weer bij zijn!

Een gezonde maaltijd is natuurlijk altijd meegenomen. Niets is lekkerder dan een bord vol sla op een warme lentemiddag. Hieronder staat het recept.

Recept

Een recept is altijd handig, daarom hieronder een foto (ja ik ben lui;)) van het recept.

In de keuken

Zoals er staat beginnen we met het roosteren van de pijnboompitten. Gewoon pan op het vuur en de pitten erin gooien.

Na de pitten is de kipfilet aan de beurt. Snij deze in redelijk dikke repen en dan nog een keer over midden.

Een sausje eroverheen is ook altijd lekker. Roer de ingrediënten door elkaar zoals ze in het recept staan. Doe de saus nog niet over de sla, maar wacht hiermee totdat alles op tafel staat

Nu kan de sla op het bord, daarna kunnen de pitten eroverheen. Het is tijd om richting de tafel te gaan

Erg lekker bij deze sla is turks brood. Nu is turks brood zoiezo erg lekker (met ham bijvoorbeeld), maar haal hem wel bij de turk op de hoek en niet in de supermarkt.

De saus mag er nu overheen en het is tijd om dit heerlijke geheel met enige souplesse naar binnen te schuiven ;)

En daar is het een heerlijke maaltijd voor op een warme lentedag. Hier heeft het in ieder geval gesmaakt!
